Sacred rites

Chiba | Minamiboso-shi

The Takabe Shrine enshrines Iwakamutsukari no Mikoto, a deity of cooking. It has been worshipped as a deity of soy sauce and Miso. Wearing Eboshi hat and Hitatare, a performer cooks red sea bream, a carp, or Mana bonito with only a kitchen knife and a cutting board and without touching the ingredients with his hands. The movements in accordance with the traditional method and the techniques of using the knife are indeed stunning. This is a solemn ceremony conveying the traditions of Japanese cuisine.
