Along with the Murakami Festival of Murakami City and Kashiwazaki Enma Fair of Kashiwazaki City, the Kambara Festival of Niigata City is said to be one of Niigata three major Takamachi (fairs). About 450 vendor stalls are set up at and around Kambara Shrine (over a distance of one kilometer). Stalls selling Poppo-yaki, a speciality of Niigata, are also set up. A Haunted House, a Show Tent, and shooting gallery liven up the festival and remind visitors of olden times. Also, a ritual, Otakusen, is held at the Kambara Shrine Kagura Hall. This ritual has a history of 830 years and it is held to prophesy the result of rice crop.
