Sacred rites

Mie | Kuwana-shi

This is an annual festival of the Tado Shrine, and the Ageuma Horse Ritual which prophecies the harvest of the year is especially famous. In this ritual six boy riders chosen from the parishioners conduct Shojin Kessai (purification without eating meat) for a month, ride a horse wearing a Hakama and a hat and climb up the two-meter cliff. If they fall from the horse, it is considered unfortune, so people push up the rump of the horse. It has became a custom now. On the Eve Festival, a traditional Ageuma Horse Ritual is held on May 4, and at the Main Festival held on May 5, the Ageuma Horse Ritual is performed by riders in Hanagasa and warrior clothes. Togyo and backhorse archery are also conducted. The event venue is crowded with many local people.
