[2020 cancellation] Bon festival dance of Tsukudajima

Sacred rites

Tokyo | Chuo-ku

Since the Edo era, Bon festival dance was carried out in place of Tsukuda. This Bon Dance has been handed down as an event that constitutes a memorial service. To rhythm and dance song of monotonous drum played under lantern of oar, sorrow and sense of the vanity of life drift for dance that flavor to repeat going back and forth is deep. The Tsukudajima’s Bon Dance (which has been designated by the city of Tokyo as an intangible folk cultural property) is a precious folk performing art that retains the atmosphere of the Edo period.
