The Shotoen Garden which is usually not opened to the public is opened for a limited period. The Shotoen Garden is Chisen Kaiyu-Shiki Garden (a Japanese style garden with a pond in the center) covering 13,000 square meters. It was designated as one of the historic sites in Tokyo in 1936. It is said that the garden was made by Kobori Enshu who is famous for the construction of the Katsura Villa and its garden. This is a place where Takamori Saigo, a staff officer of the new government army, and Kaishu Katsu from the former Tokugawa bakufu army, negotiated over the surrender of Edo the Castle in March, 1868. Visitors are welcome to take a stroll in the garden with the rich greenery and enjoy the historic feelof the place, something that makes one forget theyare in Tokyo. ※2020 cancellation
